Named after Martyn Smith who served Great Barr as a councillor for 27 years. He died in October 2007 after a five-year battle against cancer aged 61. He was the first Liberal to be elected to Sandwell Council in 1980 and was followed two years later by his wife, Sadie Smith. Both of them went on to be Liberal Democrat group leaders on the council. Sadie Smith became the first Liberal Democrat mayor of Sandwell in 2006 after her husband Martyn had passed up the opportunity.
