Hems Farm

The area bounded by Bowstoke Road and Tanhouse Avenue was originally part of Hems Farm. Hems Farmhouse was near the end of Hamstead road on the corner where it turns before joining the Newton Road.

Farms

Hamstead and Great Barr has been for most of its time a rural community and even today has significant reminders of its rural past. Only one farmhouse exists at Peak House - this was considered for listing but as it is a 'standard' sort of farmhouse it was not considered and being rare enough, although it is uncommon in this area.

There are several areas which are used for grazing but no real farming.

Gorse Farm

Situated between the canal and Scott Arms the farmhouse was situated around where the shops are now in Gorse Farm Road.
